My name is Dr. David Roger Miller, I am an Academic Advisor.
I have been in education for 42 years as a high school teacher, administrator, guidance counsellor, and athletic coach. I have a decade of experience as an academic advisor and coach at the university level, as well as experience teaching and building on-line course work in the field of finance and business.
For those who are in Grade 11 & 12:
I have the experience, depth of knowledge, understanding of the process, not to mention the enthusiasm and interest, to offer students solid advice and direction in the area of university applications and admission.
I understand that parents are a necessary and important component to any discussion about university, and I welcome and encourage their presence, questions, and concerns.
I help direct the process but expect students to take what they learn and be proactive. I encourage parents to join us in any and all sessions. As a team, let’s make this process effective, efficient and enjoyable and productive.
For those who are in Grade 8 & 9:
I use a series of 6 inventories and surveys to determine who you are, how you “look” at the world, what you enjoy, your strengths, callings, proclivities and learning styles.
The results of these inventories have an immediate impact on the course each student should chart and how to go about it.
I have current and up to date information on career paths, as well as specific information on each of the 5,900 programs offered across the country in Canadian universities, colleges, and technical schools.
I have seen, time and time again, that kids with a clear understanding of themselves and long-term goals for whom the worry of "what's next" is assuaged, take school more seriously, are more engaged focused and enjoy school more than those who just go every day without a direction or purpose.
